What we actually changed

This picture was taken on June, 23rd, 2015. Our employees and I had a dinner together after moving into Juxian. The weather was so great that we ate in the yard in front of a restaurant. There are two employees missing in this picture. One went back to Hong Kong, and the other went to Yiwu.

I hope everyone working in our company will be fine even though they leave the company. Actually, we all were really inexperienced. Mr. Kook, Mrs. Chin, and me… However, a year later, everyone becomes different. I am getting used to this rural area, and other people including Mr. Kook, Mrs. Chin, and some employees who I saw first in Juxian are also doing so.

Some of them met with a Korean person for the first time and quickly got accustomed to working in the factory because we rarely saw each other. There is a Chinese word, 拖拖拉拉(toutoulala). Its meaning is the same as a word ‘dawdle over.’ Like this, we seem to dawdle over preparing something new. Including me, everyone has changed a lot. Actually, I don’t know what producing a brand shopping bag means, but we have totally reduced the rate of errors more than in Yiwu. When we were in Yiwu, we had a lot of defective goods in our warehouse.

But, now, we have only a few things. This does bode well for us. Everyone knows what happens when we get errors, so we all have changed in a good way. Nowadays, I think that Mr. Kook changed a lot. We can’t usually what Mr. Kook is doing because his duties are consciously and unconsciously carried on. When he was up all night printing, our employees don’t know what he does.

Only our Chinese boss and I know the fact. I sometimes don’t know. He usually works outside of our office in order to see printing, look for paper, order a new knife, and more…

Actually, other employees don’t know he really does that all. Even though our company is small, our boss definitely knows whether he is idling away or actually working hard when she sees him. In fact, Mr. Kook does his best on his duties.

However, he is not good at dealing with other employees because he never learns how to do so. He probably doesn’t have enough time to learn it because there is an organizational problem in our company.

What I want him to do is to handle six or seven employees under him well, but he didn’t much care about them first. So, I warned him against his behavior several times, but I totally realized that he didn’t know how to educate other people. Another problem was that Mr. Kook and Mrs. Chin have several same duties. Then, I reduced her duties and assigned all things within our factory to Mr. Kook. Also, I asked him to study bookkeeping and other things, but he couldn’t change a lot first.

One or two months later, he started to do suitable work for his position. He has changed. There seems to be something different. The more Mr. Kook changes, the more Mrs. Chin is comfortable. She can do other things and have enough time to take care of her child. I think he shows only 30% of his power at work. A change in the power makes him different.

I don’t want him to put in his all efforts. I know that many things will be changed if he displays at least 50% of his ability. What a company and his life… He does not know where the end of his ability is. It is not easy for me to guess that. Nonetheless, I know one thing. If he does his best more, he will receive twice as many results and pleasure as his life so far.

I hope that his change supports our company’s very tremendous adventure this year. In some ways, it might be a good opportunity to see his change and make up my stagnant mind. He seems to be interested in his change. I hope that his interest will be a first step to learn another technology. It’s 50%, not 100%...
